Welcome, and comments on mixed-symmetry gauge fields

I had planned to speak about some 
recent work on string bit models, 
done in collaborration with Sourav 
Raha and Charles Thorn.  However, 
both of my coauthors are participants 
at this meeting, and they will speak 
about these subjects later, on Sunday.  
They are more informed and better 
qualified to do this.  

So I will instead recall some of the 
halcyon days of my youth.  This to 
serve as a brief introduction to the 
following talk, "Gravitational duality 
and deformations of action principles 
for mixed-symmetry tensor fields" by 
Sergio Hoertner.
