Emergent String

I offer fresh perspectives on the string bit
models*, which Bergman and I advocated in
the 1990's. These models can provide a solid
foundation for string theory. The emergence
of string from bits entails also the emergence
of space itself. In this talk I explain this
holographic phenomenon using a stripped down
superstring bit model in zero space dimensions,
which produces a string moving in one space
dimension. More complicated models, still
in zero space dimensions, can produce string
moving in several dimensions. While these
models are physically sensible, they will
not generically yield Lorentz covariant dynamics,
just as subcritical lightcone quantized
string is not Lorentz covariant.
